Banking without the banks

Many think the financial crisis creates new opportunities for companies outside the banking sector such as Tesco Bank and Virgin Money. Both have announced plans to expand significantly in retail banking. A new report, written with Professor Steve Worthington and published through PCM, will examine the opportunities and challenges facing the "non-banks". The report is due in February 2010. Send an email if you want to be notified when it is available.

overview

Welcome to the BankEcon site. The site is maintained by Peter Welch, an industry consultant. It is designed to be both a source of information on my latest banking research and a helpful source of leads on European and international banking.

Research

I write research articles, short bulletins and longer reports on current topics in banking, often in partnership with others. Some are freely available for download. Topics range across the measurement of bank efficiency and performance, developments in card payments and the impact of non-banks such as retailers on the financial services market.

Recent journal articles are listed below. Visit the reports and bulletins pages for more information on available reports and bulletins.

Consultancy

I undertake strategic research and analysis. My main areas of work are market and competitor analyses, with a geographic focus on pan-European developments, and a sectoral focus on personal banking, cards and payments.

I have a long-standing research interest in performance metrics in banking. This includes studies challenging the validity of the cost/income ratio and other widely-used measures of bank efficiency, and more recently, work on the development of a cash-flow based performance frameworks for banks.

If you have a possible project you wish to discuss, please make contact using the phone number or e-mail address below.
